THE THREE GUNAS (Ayurvedic medicine basics)

THE THREE GUNAS.
In the Ayurvedic medicine and philosophy, a guṇa is one of three "tendencies":
tamas, sattva, and rajas.
These categories have become a common means of categorizing behavior and natural phenomena in Hindu philosophy, and also in Ayurvedic medicine, as a system to assess conditions and diets.
Guṇa is the tendency of the mind and not the state.
For instance, sattva guṇa is that force which tends to bring the mind to purity but is not purity itself.
Similarly rajas guṇa is that force which tends to bring the mind to perform some action but is not action itself.
Sattva (originally "being, existence, entity") has been translated to mean balance, order, or purity. This typically implies that a person with more of Sattva has a positive or even orderly state of mind. Such a person is psychologically kind, calm, alert and thoughtful. Compare also the bodhisattvas in Buddhism.
Indologist Georg Feuerstein translates sattva as "lucidity".
Rajas (originally "atmosphere, air, firmament") leads one to activity. This type of activity is explained by the term Yogakshem. Yogakshem is composed of two words: Yoga and Kshem. Yoga in the present context is acquiring something that one does not have. Kshem means losing something that one already has. Rajas is the force that creates desires for acquiring new things and fears for losing something that one has. These desires and fears lead one to activity.
Feuerstein translates rajas as "dynamism".
Tamas (originally "darkness", "obscurity") has been translated to mean "too inactive", negative, lethargic, dull, or slow. Usually it is associated with darkness, delusion, or ignorance. A tamas quality also can imply that a person has a self-destructive or entropic state of mind. That person is constantly pursuing destructive activities.
Feuerstein translates tamas as "inertia".

The Sanskrit word guṇa has the basic meaning of "string" or "a single thread or strand of a cord or twine". In more abstract uses, it may mean "a subdivision, species, kind", and generally "quality".
In classical literature (e.g. Mahabharata, Bhagavata Purana and Bhagavad Gita), a guṇa is an attribute of the five elements, five senses, and five associated body parts:
· Ether, associated with the guṇa śábda ("sound") and with the ear.
· Air, associated with the guṇa sparśa ("feeling") and with the skin.
· Fire, associated with the guṇa rūpa ("appearance", and thus color and tangibility) and with the eye.
· Water, associated with the guṇa rasa ("taste", and thus also flavor and tangibility, as well as shape) and with the tongue.
· Earth, associated with all the preceding guṇas as well as the guṇa gandha ("smell") and with the nose.

//
Sattvic guna

Etymologically, the word sattva is derived from “sat”, which conveys the meaning of being or existing. It also has the sense of real or true.
In a secondary sense, sat means good or virtuous.
The suffix “tva”, corresponding to the English suffix "-ness", by addition gives a word the sense of a state or a quality. Thus sattva literally means “existing-ness” or goodness.

Sattvic creatures:
A person or creature can be called sāttvika if the creature has predominantly sāttvika tendencies.
An sāttvika individual always works for the welfare of the world. He is always hardworking, alert and lives life moderately.
He leads a chaste life. He eats moderately. He speaks the truth and is bold.
He never uses vulgar or insulting language. He does not feel jealous nor is he affected by greed and selfishness.
He does not cheat or mislead anyone. He does not even allow any evil tendencies to enter his mind.
He has good memory and concentration. He also has keen interest in improving his spiritual knowledge, and spends time worshiping God or meditating.
In the extreme state he may even perform penance or uninterrupted meditation.
A satvic individual can be recognized if his mind, speech and actions synchronize. Manasa, vacha, karmana are the three Sanskrit words used to describe such a state.
Some of the people considered by Hindus to be sāttvika are:
· Holy men and bhaktas like Tulsidas, Tyagaraja, Tukaram
· Ancient rishis like Vashishta, Kashyapa
· Modern day sages like Ramana Maharshi, Aurobindo, Vivekananda
· Divine beings in heavens
· Some flora and fauna like lotus (symbolizes purity), cow (symbolizes mother)
It is that constituent of the nature of pleasure and contentment.
It is pure, externally, in the sense of freedom from dust, dirt or taint, and internally, as a state free from moral fault.

Sattva-guna is healthy, free from disease, weakness and malfunction.
It embodies soundness and balance. When sattva-guna is predominant, its distinctive feature is illumined awareness or knowledge.
One experiences clearness of thought, a broad yet focused attention.
One becomes free from ignorance and experiences spiritual and intellectual enlightenment.
When the influence of sattva-guna increases in a person he feels a sense of lightness in his limbs and that his senses become clear and capable of easily grasping their objects.

Concerning the character of one in the mode of sattva, the following qualities can be enumerated:

Such a person is calm and peaceful as he does not strive to satisfy the incessant flow of desires within the mind.
He is self-controlled and does not use his senses for exaggerated enjoyment, beyond his basic needs.
He is tolerant of the offences of others and discriminates between good and bad.
He remains true to his responsibilities.
He strictly follows his duty with great determination and enthusiasm, without bragging or boasting about his achievements.
He remains unperturbed and unwavering in success or failure. He maintains truthfulness and in this way does not distort the truth for some personal interest.
He is sympathetic and is intolerant of others' unhappiness.
He is mindful of the past and future, and does not forget his identity as separate from matter.
He is satisfied in any condition and is not eager to gather increasingly more material possessions.
He is instinctively religious, generous, and feels embarrassed at acting improperly.
He is gentle, patient, clean and steady. He is sensible, conscientious and able to think in a clear and intelligent way.

For an object or food to be sāttvika, it must be uncontaminated and should not spread evil or disease in the world.
On the contrary its presence must purify the surroundings. Thus when an individual consumes such a food, he must feel that he is eating pure food.
The food should be healthy, nutritious and clean.
It should also not weaken the power or equilibrium of mind.
This idea disallows aphrodisiac or other drugs and intoxicants that can affect the mind.
It also disallows food or objects obtained after killing or causing pain to a creature.
This is because the object would then have source in an evil act.
It also excludes stale and pungent-smelling food.

Some objects that are considered sāttvika are:
· Flowers, fruits, and living food, all that are allowed as offerings to God
· Neem tree
· The milk of a cow which has grown in good surroundings, is healthy and has been obtained after the calf of the cow has been fed well. In cases when the cow has been ill treated, it becomes sinful or evil to drink such milk. It must be remembered that the cow is sacred for the Hindus.

Satvic items, energies, qualities and personalities:

· Morning, vata, solar, forest.
· Brahmanas (class of intellectual people)
· Increases power of demigods.
· Purest in the material world, illuminating without sinful reaction.
· Knowledge.
· Pure. Full of happiness, virtue, knowledge, and other good qualities.
· Devotee offers the results of activities in order to free himself from defects.
· Regulated activities, performed without attachment, without love or hatred and without desire for results, without consideration of the fruits.
· Unbreakable, sustained by steadfastness in yoga practice, control activity of mind, life force and senses.

Sattva (originally "being, existence, entity") has been translated to mean balance, order, or purity. This typically implies that a person with more of Sattva has a positive or even orderly state of mind. Such a person is psychologically kind, calm, alert and thoughtful.
Compared also to the bodhisattvas in Buddhism.

Satvic quality of mind:

· One undivided spiritual nature seen in all living beings.
· Concerns the spirit soul beyond the body.
· absolute knowledge
· All the gates of the body illuminated by knowledge.
· Consciousness becomes clear, senses detached from matter.
· One experiences fearlessness in the body and detachment from the mind.
· One has the opportunity to realize Krsna.
· Mind and sense control, tolerance, discrimination.
· Sticking to one's prescribed duties, truthfulness, mercy, careful study of the past and future.
· Satisfaction in any condition, generosity.
· Renunciation of sense gratification, faith in the spiritual master, being embarrassed at improper action.
· Charity, simplicity, humility and so on.
· Satisfaction within oneself.
· By which one knows what ought to be done and not to be done, what is to be feared and not to be feared, what is binding and liberating.
· Not influenced by the modes, without false ego, with determination and enthusiasm, without wavering in success or failure.
· Free of attachment.
· With loving devotion, by prescribed duties without material attachment.

Satvic food:

· Juicy, fatty, wholesome, pleasing to the heart.
· Increases longevity, purifies existence, gives strength, health, happiness, satisfaction.
· Pure, obtained without difficulty.

A sattvic diet is a diet based on foods which are strong in the sattva guna, according to Ayurveda and Yoga, and lead to clarity and equanimity of mind while also being beneficial to the body.

Such foods include:
water, fruit, germinated cereals and seeds, most vegetables, beans, nuts, grains, ghee, honey.
A sattvic diet is also referred to as a "yoga diet" or "sentient diet."
Rajas guna

The word rajas is derived from the verbal root “raïj-” whose spectrum of meaning ranges from “being coloured”, to “being affected or attracted”.
The word is used to denote things which color or partially darken the sky, such as mist, clouds and dust. In a more abstract sense it refers to emotion and powerful and controlling feelings.

Rajasic creatures:

They are characterized by passion, or intense and ungovernable emotions compelling one to action.
They are mobile and stimulating.
Hence the predominance of raja-guna is inferred from the presence of desire and hankering, restlessness and the undertaking of actions.
A person under the influence of rajas becomes driven and has to be on the move all the time. He wants to get bigger and better and increase.
The end result of this type of over activity and feverish enjoyment is misery and thus raja-guna is said to be of the nature of pain and dissatisfaction.
When the influence of raja-guna increases in a person he becomes fickle in mind and erratic in action.
(”I’ll go to the town; I’ll court a woman; I’ll practice austerity...”)
His mind is in a state of constant anxiety.

Regarding the character of one in the mode of rajas, the following qualities can be found:

He possesses many mundane aspirations, and with great effort endeavors to fulfill them, yet remains dissatisfied even in gain, always hankering for more.
He is attached to his work and the fruits thereof, are subject to joy and sorrow and lacks purity both in a moral and a physical sense.
He is bold and arrogant and is falsely pride, claiming exaggerated personal importance and stature.
He is envious of other’s achievements.
Desiring rapid success in his own enterprises he depends on and beseeches people of influence and power.
He considers himself different and better than others.
Being hostile and violent by nature, he has a rash eagerness to quarrel and fight, though his courage is simply based on self-conceit.
He has a fondness for hearing himself praised and has the tendency to ridicule others.
He has a strong sense of masculine pride with an exaggerated sense of power, often justifying his actions by his strength.

Originally "atmosphere, air, firmament", leads one to activity.
(Rajas is etymologically unrelated to the word raja.)

In Samkhya philosophy, one of the six schools of Hindu philosophy, rajas (Sanskrit rajas, or rajaguna) is the quality (guna) of activity.
If a person or thing tends to be extremely active, excitable, or passionate, that person or thing is said to have a preponderance of rajas.
It is contrasted with the quality of tamas, which is the quality of inactivity, darkness, and laziness, and with sattva, which is the quality of purity, clarity, and healthy calmness.
Rajas is a force which promotes one or more of the following:
(1) Action;
(2) Change, mutation;
(3) Passion, excitement;
(4) Birth, creation, generation.

Note that passion is a feeling (often) associated with the act of generating something new.
Rajas is viewed as being more positive than tamas, and less positive than sattva; except, perhaps, for one who has "transcended the gunas".
The (eventual) fruit of rajas is pain, even though the immediate effect of rajas is pursuit of pleasure.

Rajasic items, energies, qualities and personalities:

· Afternoon, pita, prana, town, misery, active.
· Ksatriyas (class of administrators) Vaisyas (class of farmers and merchants), warriors, and kings.
· Increases power of asuras (demons)
· Born of desire or lust.
· Arises from hankering.
· Greed
· By a separatist mind with a motive for material enjoyment, fame and opulence.
· Works hard to acquire prestige and fortune.
· Experiences anxiety and struggle.
· Perform with big effort by one seeking to gratify desires, enacted from a sense of false ego, with a desire to enjoy the results.

Rajasic quality of mind:

· Sees a different type of living being in every different body.
· Produces many theories and doctrines by dint of mundane logic and mental speculation.
· Knowledge based on duality.
· Great attachment, intense endeavor, uncontrollable desire and hankering.
· Distortion of intelligence because of too much activity, inability of perceiving senses to disentangle themselves from mundane objects.
· An unhealthy condition of working physical organs, unsteady perplexity of the mind.
· Material desire, great endeavor, audacity.
· Dissatisfaction even in gain, pride, praying for material advancement,
· Considering oneself different and better than others (separatist mentality).
· Sense gratification.
· Rash eagerness to fight, courage based on intoxication, a fondness for hearing oneself praised.
· the tendency to ridicule others, advertising one's own prowess,
· Justifying one's actions by one's strength.
· Cannot distinguish between religion and irreligion, between actions that ought to be done and ought not to be done.
· Attached to work and the fruits, desiring to enjoy the fruits, greedy, always envious, impure, moved by joy and sorrow, blinded by personal desire
· Practice prescribed duties with the hope of gaining material benefit.

Rajasic food:

· Bitter, sour, salty, hot, pungent, dry,
· Burning, causes distress, misery, disease.
· Gives immediate pleasure to the senses.

Tama guna

Originally "darkness", "obscurity", has been translated to mean "too inactive", negative, lethargic, dull, or slow.
Usually it is associated with darkness, delusion, or ignorance.
A tamas quality also can imply that a person has a self-destructive or entropic state of mind.
That person is constantly pursuing destructive activities.

In Hinduism and Buddhism, Tamas, or tamo-guna, is the lower of the three gunas.
It is a force which promotes one or more of the following:

(1) Darkness.
(2) Death.
(3) Destruction.
(4) Ignorance.
(5) Sloth.
(6) Resistance.

The nature of this third guna is opposed to that of both sattva and rajas. It is opposed to sattva in being heavy and in causing ignorance, by obscuring knowledge and the ability to know.
It also resists raja-guna as it restrains the motion of things and produces the state of apathy and indifference.
The predominance of tama-guna thus results in indolence, sleep and confusion.
In the extreme case it can even lead to insanity. When the limbs of the body feel heavy and the senses become slow and incapable of grasping their objects properly, one then knows that tama-guna has increased in influence.

Tamasic creatures:

Such a person is wrathful and lacks in generosity, being unwilling to share what he has with others.
He is untruthful, violent-natured and apt to quarrel.
He depends upon others for survival and lives as a parasite.
He is hypocritical, pretending to be what he is not.
He is chronically fatigued, always feeling tired and weak.
He constantly laments and is under delusion.
He is depressed and habitually sleeps too much.
He has a self-destructive or entropic state of mind.
He indulges in false and groundless hopes and expectations and is fearful and paranoid.
He is lazy and procrastinating.
Though he has the capacity to work, he makes no endeavor. He drags on forever that which can be done in a short amount of time.

Note that sloth is related to death by analogy, and likewise, ignorance is related to darkness.
Tamas is viewed as being more negative than either rajas or sattva.
Tamas has also been translated as "indifference", this the most negative guna because its rejection of Karmic Law, and the central principle of dharmaic religions' that one's Karma must be worked out and not ignored.

tamasic items, energies, qualities and personalities:

· Night, kapha, lunar, gambling house, foolishness.
· Vaisyas (class of farmers and merchants) and Sudras (class of workers)
· Helpless/dull.
· Increases power of the most wicked.
· Born out of ignorance.
· The delusion of all embodied living beings.
· Foolishness, madness, illusion.

Tamasic quality of mind:

· A person who is envious, proud, violent, angry and has a separatist nature.
· Falls into lamentation and illusion, sleeps excessively, indulges in false hopes, and displays violence to others.
· Cannot go beyond dreaming, fearfulness, lamentation, moroseness and illusion.
· By which one is attached to one kind of work as all in all, without knowledge of reality and is very meager.
· Concerned only with keeping the body comfortable, materialistic knowledge.
· Darkness, inertia, madness, illusion.
· Failure and disappearance of higher awareness, inability to concentrate. (short attention span)
· The mind is ruined and manifests ignorance and depression.
· Intolerant anger, stinginess, speaking without scriptural authority (false speech)
· Violent hatred, living as a parasite (begging), hypocrisy, chronic fatigue.
· Quarrel, lamentation and delusion, depression, unhappiness and false humility, sleeping too much, false expectations, fear, laziness.
· Under spell of illusions and darkness considers irreligion to be religion and vice versa and strives always in the wrong direction.
· Engaged in work against injunction of scripture, materialistic, obstinate, cheating, expert in insulting, morose and procrastinating.
· Completely forgotten how to tell right from wrong.
· With the desire to commit violence against others.

Tamasic food:

· Old (over three hours after preparation)
· Tasteless.
· Overcooked.
· Decomposed, putrid, consisting of remnants and untouchable things.
· Unclean, causing distress.

To sum it up:

Every type of food we are attracted to reveals a correspondent character tendency.

For example, if we are predominantly attracted by alcohol, or overcooked, stale, preserved food that means that we are more of a tamasic character.

Freshly cooked, hot, salty food tendancies reveals a more rajasic temperament.

To start evolving we can chose consciously to change the kind of food we eat.

If we decide to eat a diet composed exclusively of sattvic food (or Living food), respecting the food combinations, eaten at the right moment of the day, in pleasant and peaceful surroundings, and prepared with Love, a simple and deep “thanks to the Universe” expressed in one’s Heart before eating, we will climb the spiritual ladder with increasing speed and comfort.

Interestingly enough, the ayurvedic food classification can be closely paralleled to the Living food classification, as used by the Essenes, and compiled by the late doctor Edmond Bordeaux Szekely (see THE BIOGENIC SOCIETY), as follows:

-BIOGENIC FOOD = Sattvic food
(Fathering life)
*germinated seeds
*sprouted seeds
*lacto-fermented nuts
*lacto-fermented vegetables (sauerkraut)

-BIOACTIVE FOOD = Sattvic food
(Fitting life)
*fresh and raw (organic) fruits.
*fresh and raw (organic) vegetables.
*Seaweed (raw, fresh or dried)
*green and root condiments.
*spirulina.
*bee products.

-BIOSTATIC FOOD = Rajasic food
(Slowing down life)
*cooked dishes (Over 40 Celsius degrees-about 100 Far.)
*tinned and canned food
*dry nuts
*raw and cooked pulses
*brown sugar

-BIOCIDIC FOOD = Tamasic food.
(Killing life)
*all types of meat
*all types of dairy products
*peanuts (raw, cooked, buttered, oil…)
*cooked cereals and oil-yielding seeds
*white sugar
*salt (all types, soy sauce, tamari…)
*alcohol
*tobacco
*coffee, tea, chocolate
*refined oils (all types)
*flour (all types, and all uses)
*food processing additives
*irradiated food
*genetically modified food

In the same order of idea, when we like to eat is a way to determine whether we are predominantly sattvic, rajasic, or tamasic.

TIME TABLE
-------------------
(Sun hours)

· 4 am to noon: sattvic
Detoxification

(Please drink plenty of water and fast
to avoid cutting the detox)

· noon to 8 pm: rajasic
Digestion

(The best time for some meal(s)!)

· 8 pm to 4 am: tamasic
Assimilation

(During this time, the immune system
is distributing nutrients, so please no food too!)

Body/Mind/Spirit are inter-related, and can’t be separated from one another.

What we do with/to the mind will have repercussions on the body.

for example if we chose to focus our thoughts exclusively on positive, kind, peaceful, spiritual matters, our physical body will lighten up, lose weight if needed, as we will be longing more and more regularly for sattvic-Living food, and with increasing pleasure!...

As a consequence of our releasing of addictions, and after a while, we will feel no longer attracted by rajasic and tamasic food.

On the other hand, we can use our body to alter negatively the mind.
For example by drinking alcohol, our mind will be heavily disturbed.
Rudolph Steiner used to describe alcohol as “the “Me”s great diluent”, for it is weakening resolve, will power, interest in Life and spiritual evolution.
(Alcohol is one of the most tamasic product human beings can ingest.)

When we meditate regularly, especially when using pranaymas, we soon lose appetite for rajasic and tamasic food; though sometimes after a period of adaptation, whilst we can experience a recrudescence in compulsive consumption…
Compulsions that can be mastered by the strong resolve coming from the Mind!

And to decide to eat sattvic-Living food will help the Mind to strengthen the resolve to pursue a more spiritual Life…

THE KING GONE “CRAZY”.

THE KING GONE “CRAZY”.

There was once a beloved king, whose castle was on a high hill, overlooking his shire.
He was so popular that the nearby townspeople sent him gifts daily, and his birthday celebration was enjoyed throughout the kingdom.
The people loved him for his renowned wisdom and fair judgments.

One day, tragedy struck the town.
The water supply was polluted, and every man, woman, and child went insane.
Only the king, who had a private spring, was spared.

Soon after the tragedy, the mad townspeople began speaking of how the king was acting “strangely” and how his judgments were poor and his wisdom a sham.
Many even went so far as to say that the king has gone crazy.
His popularity soon vanished.
No longer did the people bring him gifts or celebrate his birthday.

The lonely king, high on the hill, had no company at all.
One day he decided to leave the hill and pay a visit to the town.
It was a warm day, and so he drank from the village fountain.

That night there was a great celebration. The people all rejoiced, for their beloved king had “regain his sanity”.

HOW TO GET A DEMONSTRATION.

HOW TO GET A DEMONSTRATION.

Here is one way of solving a problem by Scientific Prayer, or, as we say in metaphysics, of getting a demonstration.

Get by yourself and be quiet for a few moments, once a day for several days, drop all your worries for the time being-this is absolutely essential-relax the body, and begin to think about God.

Ask Him to come into your mind, then remind yourself of some of the things you know about Him-that He is present everywhere, that He has all Power, that He knows and love and cares for you, and so forth…
You can even read a paragraph from any spiritual book that helps you.
During this stage it is important not to think about the problem, but to give your attention to God.
In other words, do not try to solve the problem directly (which would be using will power) but rather become interested in thinking of the Nature of God.

Then, ask the Great Universal Power to endow you with whatever thing you are most needing; whether that be health, or Peace of mind, or guidance, or a job, or even money, or what not.
Claim the thing that you need, claim it quietly and confidently, as you would ask for something to which you are entitled.

On no account must you give instructions to that Power, because it will not take them; and if you try to compel it, nothing will happen.
Be receptive.
Be open-minded.
Be humble.
Be patient.

Then give thanks for the accomplished fact, as you would if somebody handed you a gift.
Do not discuss your treatment with anyone.
Do your best not to be tense or hurried.
Tension and hurry delay the demonstration.

In quietness and confidence shall be your strength.

And you will see what you will see.
Something remarkable will happen.

I have nothing to deal with but my own thoughts.

HOW TO BECOME SLIM AND HEALTHY WITHOUT HASSLE???!!!!!

HOW TO BECOME SLIM AND HEALTHY WITHOUT HASSLE???!!!!!

If the measure of health is abundant energy, a youthful appearance and resistance to disease then how many of us could say we are healthy?
Don’t we sometimes feel tired and fatigued, strained and stressed? We look in the mirror and wonder what happened to our youthful countenance as the course of living takes its toll. What if there was a way to enjoy more energy and slow down the ageing process? Well, there is… and it’s so very simple to do.
The way we eat and the foods we choose make a vast difference to our health. But we’re not talking about another newfangled diet. It is an age-old way of eating. And the good news is that it is completely natural, delicious and easily integrated into any lifestyle.
We know the Essenes, the Hounzas, the Vilcabambas, the Brahmanes and other long-lived races, used these principles thousands of years ago. The Essene’s extensive knowledge of agriculture enabled them to cultivate many types of food in often-difficult conditions. Their diet consisted of ‘living foods’. Today, these living foods are also referred to as ‘biogenic’ which derives from the Greek word meaning ‘generating life’, first coined by the late Dr Edmond Bordeaux Szekely. He used living foods on thousands of patients suffering from serious illness with remarkable success. His “health ranch” is still active and receives thousands of people each year.
Biogenic classifications
The biogenic way of eating classifies foods into four groups, which describe their effect on our body and psyche.
Biogenic – life generating
Bioactive – life sustaining
Biostatic – life slowing
Biocidic – life destroying
Biogenic food is composed of all germinated and sprouted seeds and lacto-fermented vegetables and nuts.
They are energetically potent and can synthesize entirely new compounds and substances, required by the body to perform functions such as cell renewal and the elimination of harmful toxic substances such as heavy metals, free radicals and bacterias. The result is improved digestion, more resistance to disease and a lot more energy and awareness. Ideally our food intake should comprise at least 25% of biogenic food at the beginning of each meal to increase health.
Bioactive foods include fresh, raw, preferably organic, fruits and vegetables, raw seaweed, spirulina and bee products.
These whole, unadulterated foods have all their nutrients, amino acids and enzymes intact, which support life.
Natural raw foods are easy to digest and do not create toxicity in the body. They also help maintain the correct acid/alkaline balance, making it impossible for bacteria to proliferate in decomposing food, thus avoiding the fungus infection.
Our bioactive food intake should be at least 50% combined with biogenic food (at the beginning of each meal) for the same result as above.
Biostatic foods include any food cooked over 45 Celsius, long preserved food, raw and cooked pulses, processed cereals, dry nuts and brown sugar.
These denatured foods slow down the life process, require more energy to digest and create toxic by-products, which the body then has to find more energy to eliminate. If you choose to eat biostatic foods make sure you eat them after a large amount of living food for a healthier life-style.
Biocidic foods literally kill life. Included are all types of meat and dairy products, peanuts, cooked and raw oil yielding seeds and cereals, canned food, white sugar, salt, alcohol, tobacco, coffee, tea, chocolate, refined oils, all types of flour, food processing additives such as chemicals, colourings and preservatives, irradiated food, genetically modified food. These are the ones to avoid.

Fortunately, by eating predominantly biogenic and bioactive foods, and before occasionally indulging in biostatic and biocidic foods, our system will be in good enough shape to cope.
No more than 25% of these killer foods should be eaten.
(for those who chose to increase their health…)

If biostatic or biocidic foods are eaten first on an empty stomach our body identifies them as enemies. In defence, white immune cells are deployed to the area, thus depleting the enzymatic level, and over-stimulating the immune system which over time affects resistance to disease.
Living foods are recognized as friendly and this above response does not occur if they are eaten first.
So, and only for those willing to respect the Universal Laws regulating our body- always begin the meal with your 75 % of living food.

And avoid greasy and heavy dressings, at least before a solid consumption of living food.

The immune system will be a lot more comfortable, and we will re-discover the pleasure of natural food, without artificial (and toxic!) stimulants (salt, refined and cooked oils, etc…)

Please refer to the BASIC DAILY PROGRAM, for a more structured program.

The body’s intelligence
One of the remarkable things about eating living foods is that in a short period of time (generally within three days) the body becomes more sensitive to its own needs. Its innate intelligence is restored and active. Foods that are detrimental to health are immediately detected.
Another benefit is that the hypothalamus, which controls appetite, does its job properly by letting you know that you have had enough to eat. This makes weight control effortless without the need to count calories or restrict food intake.
Other benefits include a reversal of ageing, immunity from disease and infection is far greater and an abundant amount of energy is available to you. Many health problems may be avoided or eliminated by eating in this way.

For example skin complaints such as pimples or rashes can be quickly eliminated with living food based hygiene.
Skin problems indicate an impaired digestive function with toxic waste not being efficiently eliminated, as the large intestine is clogged and full of stored, putrefied, molded meat and dairy products, cooked cerals, and lacks the necessary enzymes to detoxicate properly, favorizing the formation of fungus and other Candidas.
Of course, when you first start with living foods, the elimination process kicks in which means that some symptoms may be aggravated by the detoxifying action.
However this is a good sign, showing that the body is strong enough and has sufficient energy to clean up the problem.
Just keep going with your new and much more natural way of Life!

Additional tips for conscious eating
Every time we eat our mood is amplified and energetically transmitted so that food prepared or eaten in anger, distress or unhappiness is a potential poison for the body.
It is best not to eat until you are emotionally balanced. Eat heartily and chew your food well. Digestion begins in the mouth and it is one of the keys to good health.
It is good to give thanks and gratitude for the food you eat. Your body believes what you tell it or ask of it so before eating, request that each cell in your body be completely nourished. In doing this you make the process of eating conscious.
Our body and psyche both have layers of behaviours which are firmly embedded. Making gradual changes ensures that reprogramming is more successful. Anything too drastic at once for the personal strength of the individual will guarantee discouragement and a quick return to old habits.

PRACTICAL TOOLS

HOW TO EAT A REALLY HEALTHY MEAL?!

· FIRST Most important tool in nutrition:

-chew!

The more the better.

Whatever you eat, chew it until the food is totally liquid!

Insalivating a lot our food is really important, it allows our stomach to focus on the next step of the digestion, decomposing proteins into amino acids, instead of digesting whole hard-unchewed food.

The Mahatma Gandhi used to say:
“Drink the solids, and chew the liquids!”

SECOND Most important tool in nutrition:

-Chew!

Horace Fletcher (a famous dietician from the first half of the 20th century) used to say:" if you don’t want to change anything in your diet, at least, chew everything until it is liquid, you will increase your health and lose weight just in doing so…”

THIRD Most important tool in nutrition:
(As you’ve already guessed…)

-CHEW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The strongest muscles in the human body are the jaw muscles!
And when we contract strongly and consciously a muscle, this muscle is relaxing.
And so do our mental and emotions, releasing tensions, just with the pleasure to eat…

FOOD COMBINATIONS

Another important tool to take care of in the diet is to avoid mixing food unable to coexist together.

For example:
A mango, eaten in an empty stomach, requires about 40 minutes of stomach digestion.

And requires also very specific digestive liquids…

A carrot requires about 3 hours and very different stomach liquids to be digested correctly.

So, if we mix them together in the same meal,
the mango, trapped in the stomach until the carrot is fully digested, will ferment for more than two hours, producing a high level of acidity (very un-healthy…and agitating the mental and intensifying the emotions!!…).
And the carrot, forced to bathe in the mango’s digestive liquids released by the stomach at the same time, will ferment too!!!!!!!!!!!
Thus increasing a very un-healthy process…

So, for those willing to increase their health, please separate fruits from any other dish than fruit!

WHEN to eat?!

After chewing our food, and marrying it accordingly, the most important tool increasing our health and level of Energy is to eat the right food at the right moment.( chrono-nutrition)

- from four a-m to noon, (Solar time) our body is designed and scheduled to eliminate toxins.

If we swallow, in the morning, anything heavier than fresh fruits and plain or soda water, our digestive tube has to choose between the detoxification process and the digestion.

Because it can’t allow food inside itself without digesting it, the stomach chooses to focus on the digestive process, and thus abandon the detoxification process…

Doing so, we keep our toxins, and add some more.

-From noon to eight pm, our body is ready to digest.

It’s the best moment to eat; our digestive tube is at his best for that.
Of course, depending of the Ayur Vedic Type (VATA-PITTA-KAPHA), some persons are more comfortable eating at noon, some others, in the afternoon, or later…

Each individual has to check by himself, through empiric experience, and/or with the help of an experienced naturopath!

-From eight pm to four am, the immune system is assimilating the nutriments issued from the digestion.

Eating whatever at this moment is slowing down this process.
It’s less” dangerous” for health than eating crap food in the morning, just less well…
And to have a late meal increases the risk of hangover, even in the absence of alcohol.

AN OTHER IMPORTANT TOOL FOR HEALTH:

In order to avoid “hyper-leucositosis post-prandial”, in other words, the spectacular explosion of the white cells in the blood stream following the ingestion of cooked food into an empty stomach, and only for those willing to respect the Universal Laws regulating our body:
Always begin any meal with some living food:

-Germinated and/or sprouted seeds
-Fresh and raw vegetables

And avoid greasy and heavy dressings, at least before a solid consumption of living food.

The immune system will be a lot more comfortable, and we will re-discover the pleasure of natural food, without artificial (and toxic!) stimulants (salt, refined and cooked oils, etc…)

Please refer to the BASIC DAILY PROGRAM, for a more structured program.

So, get your camera, take a snapshot of yourself, start your living foods way to good health and take another snapshot in two months.
And note the obvious difference!
Bon appetit!

THERE, SEVERAL BOXES IN ADDITION TO THE MAIN ARTICLE.

BASIC DAILY PROGRAM

Morning:
-just after waking up, practise some tools, such as:
-pranayamas
-5 Tibetan rites
-meditation techniques
-fast walking with the mouth closed, etc…
After that, all morning:
If thirsty, drink water.
If hungry, eat fresh fruits.

Lunch:
-begin the meal with a salad of germinated and sprouted seeds
and raw vegetables.
If possible, as a dressing: FIRST COLD PRESSED oils,
plus fresh lemon juice, and crunched condiments such as:
-rosemary,basil,sage,thyme,garlic,ginger,galangal,tumeric,nutmeg,etc…
And/or plenty of dried or fresh sea weeds such as:
nori, wakame, dulse, spirulina etc....
Followed by whatever cooked dishes and desserts you like.

One hour before, during, and at least four hours after this meal:
NO FRUITS, DRIED OR FRESH, NOR HONEY!!!!!!!!!!!

Dinner:
-same as lunch.
For snacks in the afternoon:
-eat one apple (or more!!!!!!!!!) before any snack.
(Apple is the ONLY FRUIT that can be combined with everything else!!!)
This program is NOT a regime; it is based on respecting the basic laws
commanding the human body.

Preparing germinated seeds
Soak in water:
- shelled sunflower seeds for 4 - 24 hours
- unhulled sesame seeds for 6 - 24 hours
- shelled pumpkin seeds for 12 - 24 hours.
Then, rinse in a colander under running water, drain and eat as you wish, adding these wonderful ingredients if possible to a raw vegetable salad and/or with any kind of dish. Store the rest in the fridge and rinse once a day.
Of course, other seeds may be germinated, however they are a little less straightforward than these three choices.

GERMINATED CEREALS AND PULSES

*Cereals: spelt, wheat, rye, etc…
*Pulses: beans, lentils, chickpeas, etc…

-Soak whole grains 12 hours in tap water.

-Then drop them into a colander

-Rinse them thoroughly

-Place the colander on top of a plate or a bowl.

-Store in the kitchen under a tea towel

-Rinse twice daily

-When the little white spot of the germ appears,
keep the process going for:

-24 hours for the cereals
-48 hours for the pulses.

-Then rinse one last time, and pour over your dishes.

Preparing fermented nuts
Place 50% raw almonds and 50% any other raw nut (except peanuts!) in a blender, cover with water and soak overnight. In the morning blend all ingredients until thick and creamy. Empty into a bowl, cover with a tea towel, keep at room temperature, and leave to ferment for 24 to 36 hours. The mix will expand once fermented.
Once fermented, transfer to the fridge and eat as you wish, adding such condiments as garlic, ginger, seaweed, green herbs for a salad dressing, or adding maple syrup, cinnamon, cardamom, vanilla for a treat.

SPIRULINA

Spirulina is the most powerful and natural food money can buy.
It is microscopic “seaweed” growing into brackish waters.
Its spiraled form gave it her name!...

Spirulina has been used for ages by many different tribes
(In Chad and still now; in south-America, by the Aztecs...)
And now, the scientific community is re-discovering it!
Recently, the World Health Organization through out an analysis saying that the best source of proteins in the whole world is SPIRULINA!!!!!!!!

This microscopic kind of seaweed is full of:

-Amino-acids (high quality proteins under the most digestible form.)
-minerals (especially iron, under the most digestible form)
-vitamins (especially beta-carotene, for sun-tan and nice silky skin!...)
-Oligo-elements (such as copper, for the chocolate addicts!...)
-essential fatty-acids (for the hormonal balance)
-many other substances, essential for a healthy life.

Using Spirulina in the regular diet is INcreasing the:

-global health (and get rid of chronic fatigue)
-muscle gain (in every kind of sport practice)
-suppleness (joints problems)
-peace of mind (and help to deal with emotions)
-and many more positive effects!

Using Spirulina in the regular diet is DEcreasing the:

-hormonal imbalance (and the Pre-Menstrual Syndrome...)
-weight gain (without hassle!...)
-allergies, skin problems, constipation
-bulimia, anorexia
-hyper activity (for kids and adults...)
-addictions, deficiencies
-and many more positive effects!

How to take SPIRULINA?

Pour some powdered Spirulina into some water or vegetable juice
(Fresh pressed or bottled), stir a little, and drink!!!!!!
Or use a shaker for a quicker process...

More simple? That’s tough!

In case of weight problems, the best way for maximum effects is to take large amounts (twenty grams or more) of Spirulina fifteen to thirty minutes before every lunch and dinner. Thus, the centres of hunger will have the time to calm down, leaving us the ability to appreciate our meal, without being tempted to take a third (or more!) helping of mashed potatoes or pastas…

For a regular intake, large amounts (depending of the goals and rapidity sought) are to be taken just before the meal.

This can be done on a regular, or irregular basis, for a long period of time (for better results), or over a short period of time, or just as a booster.
(Exams, big party, holidays, preparation and during a trek, etc...)

SPIRULINA RECIPES
USING THE BLENDER…

Healthy appetizer:
In the blender bowl, put some sprouted alfalfa, any condiment (such as ginger, coriander, turmeric, cardamom, basil, etc…) half a glass of water (or any vegetable juice…) a couple of ice cubes, two to five (or more!...) soup spoonful of spirulina powder, blend thoroughly, and enjoy the life force!

Slimming shot:
In the blender bowl, put the same ingredients as above, and an apple(if possible a green one…) cut in quarters, and a handful of dried laver( nori seaweed)
Blend thoroughly and drink twenty minutes before the main meals (lunch and dinner).

Anti-hangover shots (before/during the party):
In the blender bowl, put some sliced celeriac and a green apple, a full glass of water, a couple of ice cubes, fresh ginger root, three to five(or more!...) soup spoonful of spirulina powder, blend thoroughly and then enjoy your party!
And the day after too!...

LIVING SAUCES
-----------------------

In the blender, mix some water, germinated sun flower seeds, colored vegetables (beet root's my favourite!) Green condiments, spices and/or spirulina.

If you find it too liquid, add some seaweed and/or germinated sunflower seeds

Pour over your salad.

Enjoy your meal!...

You can do the same with fermented nuts
(With/without germinated sun flower seeds)

And the same with fruits (dried or not), that you can pour on fruits meals.
Just respect the food combinations for a healthy life!

HEALTH TRICK.

The use of a tongue-scratcher, thoroughly, and just before any meal or snack, will decrease the appetite drastically.
This simple act will de-activate some of the hunger centres, situated along the tongue and at the end of the throat, thus enabling us to appreciate our meal and avoiding any binge cravings and bulimia…

AYURVEDIC BASICS

AYUR VEDIC MEDICINE

Tri-doshas system:

1. Vata
· Characterized by the elements AIR and ETHER.
· Subtle, light, mobile, dry cold, rough…
· It governs all movements and activities of body and mind.
· Responsible for the quality of thinking, breathing and excretion, speech, sensation, touch, hearing, smelling.
· Regulates the psychosomatic functions of the body, and controls fear anxiety, grief, enthusiasm, inspiration, courage, natural urges, circulation of the blood, and is responsible for sexual vigor.
· Dominating Vata people (Vatika) are agile, quick, and swift in taking action, anger, fear, irritation…
· Vatika people have prominent blood vessels.

Vata related disorders:

· Respiratory and blood related disorders.
· Arthritis.
· Obesity.
· Stomach problems.
· Insomnia.
· Mental disorders.

*regret and guilt.

· How to cure Vata :

1. Sweet, sour, hot foods.
2. Enemas.
3. Massages.
4. Rest, relaxation, sleep.
5. Peaceful atmosphere.
6. Cheerful mental state.

2. Pitta

· Characterized by the FIRE element.
· Sharp, sour, pungent, fleshy smell.
· Responsible for vision, hunger, thirst, digestion, heat in the body, softness, cheerfulness, intellect, sexual vigor…
· Pitta makes us look shiny, brilliant, radiant…
· (The power of digestion is called AGNI, which means FIRE…)

Pitta related disorders:

· Intolerance to heat.
· Hot face.
· Delicate organs.
· Pimples.
· Excessive thirst and hunger.
· Gray hair.
· Mouth and body odor.
· Intolerance, lack of endurance.
· Excessive perspiration.
· Dark yellow urine.
· Rashes.
· Herpes
· Jaundice.
· Feeling of dissatisfaction, loss of contentment, anger.

Factors increasing Pitta:

*sharp, alkaline, salty, burning foods.
*oily and heavy food.
*sunbathing.
*noontime, midnight, autumn.
*process of digestion (agni.)
*youth, anger.

· How to cure Pitta:

1. Sweet, bitter, astringent, cold food.
2. Fresh vegetable and fruits.
3. Cold water (in and over the body).
4. Unction and purgation.
5. Fasting.
6. Cold baths, massages.
7. Counseling.

3. Kapha

· Characterized by the elements EARTH and WATER.

· It governs unctuousness, binding, firmness, heaviness, sexual potency, restraint, the absence of greed, stability…

Kapha related disorders:

1. Pungent, bitter, astringent, sharp, hot and rough foods.
2. Wet heat.
3. Vomiting.
4. Exercise.
5. Keeping awake.

All these doshas are inter-related and inter-connected.

For example, blood circulation is a Vata function, blood is produced by Kapha, and it distributes the nutrients supplied by Pitta to the whole body.

We see through this example that the so-called and self-proclaimed “diet experts” launching a new “fashion regime” are unbalancing scores of people, victims only of a lack of good information…

The Ayur Vedic Medicine is five thousands years old.

With this vast amount of experience, we can learn how to balance ourselves, especially with the help of specific condiments and spices, alongside of various yogas and attitudes.

For example, nutmeg is highly recommended at dinner in case of insomnia, fresh grated ginger in case of slow stomach digestion, germinated fenugreek is excellent to help support weak nerves, etc…

Some condiments are well known to balance all the doshas:
· Lesser cardamom pods. (The small green one.)
· Coriander. (fresh or dried)
· Turmeric.

All of the above condiments should be added-dried and/or fresh-as often as possible, to any diet, even prior to a consultation of an ayurvedic doctor.
